III.02 – TWIWFL: The Second Week

It is, of course, far too early to really make any pronouncements. But week 2 held some possible clues.

Boston edged Dublin in overtime, moving the Year II cellar dwellers into a 4-way tie for 1st place in the Northish Division–and sending playoff contender Dublin to 0-2. Tom Brady is performing at a great level, and the addition of Jamaal Charles continues to pay dividends for the Bulldogs.

Both Dublin and London wasted some great defensive performances, with J.J. Watt registering 12 tackles, 2 sacks, and a hurry in the loss to Boston. London made a strong comeback, but Year II surprise New York held on for a tight victory over the Fog. Bobby Wagner had 20–yes, twenty–tackles for London, including 4 stuffs. Wagner was voted the Defensive Player of the Week for his efforts.

Dan Marino out-threw George Blanda in a barn-burner, moving Sydney to 2-0 and sending constant powerhouse Tokyo to 0-2. The Great White were led by Harold Carmichael‘s 11 catches for 230 yards, making it consecutive weeks a WR in the WFL gained over 200 yards. Luckily for Sydney, Carmichael (who was the Offensive Player of the Week) avoided the injury bug that bit Terrell Owens after his Week 1 performance.

Addis Ababa continued their resurgence, led by LaDainian Tomlinson‘s 168 yards a 5 rushing TDs in an easy victory over Beijing and Jim Brown registered back-to-back games with 200 yards rushing as Rio de Janeiro edged Lomé in a great game.

The leaderboards are dotted with off-season acquisitions: Boston’s Jack Butler has 2 interceptions after coming over from Istanbul; A.J. Green is blossoming in Lomé, 2nd in the league in yards with 283 (behind Carmichael’s 293); and Boomer Esiason is leading the league in QBR with 137.5 after only 2 games.
