Just over 1,000 yards of total offense has to favor George Blanda, right?
It certainly started that way, as he completed is 1st 2 passes, first to Rod Smith for 20 yards and then to Demaryius Thomas for a 56 yard TD.
But Sydney came to play, and it’s possible the absence of Wilbert Montgomery through injury helped them today, as it put the burden squarely on Dan Marino‘s shoulders. He was 3-for-3 on the 1st drive, with Larry Csonka taking it in from 11 yards out to tie the game.
Blanda would hit Ernest Givens for 51 yards, but a sack by Jerome Brown and 2 incompletions forced a 35 yard FG from Matt Prater, which was good.
Marino was picked off by Chris Harris, Jr., but Tokyo was unable to capitalize, and after a few punts, Tokyo had their 1st turnover when Lionel Taylor was hit by Tim Foley with Brandon Meriweather falling on the loose ball.
Marino was 4-for-4 on the drive, a short completion to Darren Sproles, 46 yards on 2 catches by Harold Carmichael, and a 29 yard TD to Bobby Mitchell, putting the Great White up, 14-10.
And then we began to hit gunslinger mode. Blanda found Taylor for a 48 yard TD, answered by an 11 yard toss from Marino to Dwight Clark. Tokyo answered with 10 consecutive passes, with Blanda completing 6 of them, ending with a 12 yard TD to Taylor. Blanda would add a 7 yard TD to Shannon Sharpe for the halftime score of 31-21 in favor of the Swallows.
Sydney would tie the game in the 3rd quarter: Sproles opened the half with a 48 yard kickoff return, setting the stage for a 23 yard TD from Marino to Carmichael and, after a punt by Tokyo, Jake Elliott connected from 48 yards out, sending us into the 4th quarter tied at 31.
And then things fell apart for Tokyo: you live by the Blanda, you’re gonna’ die by the Blanda. He completed only 3 of 15 passes–and while one of those was a 34 yard TD to Taylor, it wasn’t enough.
Marino, on the other hand, was stellar, finding Jeremy Maclin for a 9 yard TD for a 38-31 lead. Sproles returned a punt 77 yards for a TD, Clark caught a 9 yard TD, and Elliott was again good from 48 yards.
It all added up to a 54-38 win for Sydney.
Marino completed 26 of 36 passes for 383 yards and 5 TDs, with Carmichael catching 11 passes for 203 yards and Maclin and Clark combining for 9 catches and 91 yards. Sproles and Csonka combined for 35 rushes and 146 yards on the ground, so the offense was pretty well balanced for Sydney.
Tokyo could make no such claim, as they only rushed 6 times, all by Kimble Anders. he was effective enough, gaining 41 yards, but the real story was Blanda, who finished the day 20 for 55 for 454 yards. So, tons of yardage, and 5 TDs, but 35 incompletions is a lot. Taylor led the way with 8 catches for 190 yards.
A note on special teams: Chris Cole was solid for Tokyo, with 8 kickoff returns for 199 yards, but Sproles was even better, amassing 275 return yards (184 on 5 kickoffs, 91 more on 4 punt returns).
Neither defense was proud of their day, given the yardage they surrendered.
Tokyo was led by Harris, Jr.’s 11 tackles and pick, and John Abraham had 8 tackles and a stuff. Randy Gradishar, Karl Mecklenburg, and Blidi Wreh-Wilson each had 6 tackles.
Kamu Grugier-Hill led Sydney in tackles with 7, which is quite an achievement for a special teams player. The Great White had 9 deflections, which added to Blanda’s struggles, and Tony Banfield had an interception.
Sydney really looks to be clicking on all cylinders in Year III, while there appears to be something off in Tokyo–we may see quite a change in the Southish standings by year’s end.
