Where, oh where, has the George Blanda of yore gone?
If he was going to appear in Year III, you would think this was a great game for him to show up, as Beijing has traditionally been one of the doormats of the league. Combine their dogged dedication to proving the Full House Backfield is a legitimate WFL option with Warrick Dunn missing the game through injury, and you have a great opportunity for Tokyo.
Unfortunately for the Swallows, nobody told Alfred Morris about the plan. Morris filled in for Dunn admirably, starting from his 1st touch, which went for 9 yards. He picked up 30 yards on the opening drive for the Red Stars. Ben Roethlisberger was 4-for-4, finding Santana Moss for 18 yards, Clinton Portis for 12, Charley Hennigan for 19, and Art Monk for the 21 yard TD. Mark Moseley missed the XPA, leaving Beijing up 6-0.
That was the only score in the 1st quarter, as the teams traded punts until Tokyo got the ball with just over 4 minutes to play. It was typical Blanda, as he went 6-for-7 on the drive, which started on his own 3 yard line … and then 0-for-3, leading to Matt Prater kicking a FG from 48 yards out to cut the lead to 6-3.
Roethlisberger gave his best Blanda impression in response, completing only 4 of 7 passes, but seeing each of them go for a 1st down (16 yards to Gary Clark, 24 yards to Moss, 12 to Morris, and 21 yards for the TD to Andrew DePaola). Again, Moseley missed the XPA, extending the lead to 12-3.
Tokyo had a horrible day running the ball, with an 8 yard gain by Ronnie Hillman by far their best play of the day. Blanda had to overcome some penalties, but Tokyo moved the ball and scored on a 30 yard TD to Lionel Taylor, cutting the lead to 12-10.
Each team would add a long TD in the final 3 minutes of the half: first Roethlisberger found Clark for a 54 yard TD, then Blanda hit Shannon Sharpe for 53 yards. That gave us the halftime score of 19-17 in favor of Beijing.
It’s possible the game turned on the opening play of the 2nd half, when a vicious hit by DePaola knocked the ball loose from Chris Cole. Alterraun Verner fell on it, giving Beijing the ball at the Tokyo 27 yard line. Morris carried the ball twice, for 11 yards and then 16 yards for the TD, and Beijing was up 25-17.
After a Tokyo punt, Beijing finally got a great drive from their 3-back set, eating over 9 minutes off the clock. Bronco Nagurski picked up 11 yards, but Morris did the bulk of the damage, carrying 3 times for 36 yards before Roethlisberger found Hennigan for a 14 yard TD and a 32-17 lead.
That sort of sealed the game: the rest was Beijing running the ball and taking time off the clock, and Tokyo heaving the ball upfield. Each was occasionally effective: Blanda found Ernest Givins for a 12 yard TD on a drive that also saw Demaryius Thomas haul in a 43 yard grab and Moseley was good from 33 yards out for the final score of 35-24, Beijing.
Blanda was better than he has been, throwing for 356 yards and completing 21 of 44 passes. Sharpe caught 5 passes for 94 yards and Thomas 4 for 90 yards. The Swallows ended the game with 6 rushing attempts for, wait for it, -7 yards. Ouch.
Roethlisberger was better, completing 18 of 24 passes for 324 yards with Clark catching 7 balls for 145 yards. But the story was Morris, who gained 129 yards on 20 rushes.
Moseley’s job may be in jeopardy, which is warranted when you miss 3 of 5 XPAs and 1 of 2 FGAs.
Beijing’s defense was solid across the board, led by special teams standout DePaola’s 5 tackles. Jason Belser, Verner, Jeris White, and Lee Roy Selmon had 4 tackles each, with Belser and White deflecting passes and Belser adding a stuff as well. Selmon had 2 stuffs. Dick Anderson had a tackle and 4 deflections.
Tokyo’s defense did well at times, led by Jack Ham‘s 11 tackles and 2 stuffs and Von Miller‘s 10 tackles, 2 sacks, stuff, and hurry. Chris Harris, Jr. and Jason McCourty added 8 tackles, with Harris deflecting a pass as well. Sean Jones, Jurrell Casey, and John Abraham also registered sacks.
The real story of the game was Beijing’s edge in time of possession, roughly 43 minutes to 17. Often Blanda could overcome that, but not here, leaving the Swallows still searching for their 1st win of the season.
