02.18 – This Week in Whirled Football

Only 2 games to go in the regular season! We’ll focus more and more on the playoff teams from here on out.

#AMS

The Lions’ playoff hopes are fading somewhat, and the loss of Eddie Murray and Julius Peppers for next week’s game doesn’t help at all. Bruce Gossett has been on the taxi squad for a while, and will do the kicking for them. Jon Weeks joins the teams to replace J.J. Jansen, who is out for the rest of the year. There’s not much help coming for Amsterdam, as Billy Sims will only return to action if they do make the playoffs.

#BER

The Bärin’s late-season charge leaves them with an outside shot at the post-season, and while John Abraham and Brandon Marshall will miss next week’s contest, they may be fit enough to play in the season finale.

#BOS

A bad season in New England got worse–despite picking up their 2nd win of the year, the Bulldogs were hit hard with injuries, with stalwart LB Nick Buoniconti set to miss the rest of the season along with Jerel Worthy, Joe Rutgens, Joe Fields, and Jerod Mayo. Look for some new faces–including heralded RB Freeman McNeil–to get some time over their final 2 games.

#DUB

Dublin looks solid for the playoffs, despite losing Letroy Guion for the rest of the year. They will welcome Ray Nitschke back for the final game of the year.

#IST

Istanbul may finally be getting healthy, which is bad news for the rest of the league. No significant injuries this week, and by seasons end they will welcome back Franco Harris, Ray Lewis, and Vince Williams. Of those 3–despite how great Lewis has been–Harris has been the most missed, as the running game has been downright poor in his absence.

One more week. While the Carnival welcome the return of ever-steady Len Dawson this week, the real anticipation is for the final game of the season, which should see the return of a healthy Jim Brown (as well as the return of Derrick Thomas). The stellar offensive line has ensured the running game has been good in Brown’s absence, but his return moves it to a totally different level of efficiency.
