02.15 – This Week in Whirled Football

And we turn towards the home stretch …

Remember that from here on out, if they are available, roster spots are filled from the pool of previously released players.

#BEI

Playing better of late, the Red Stars have some challenges as Bobby Mitchell will miss at least a game and, more importantly, Alfred Morris is done for the year. Given other injuries to the WR corps, Pierre Garcon and Lawrence Dawsey should both see more time. Morris is a larger hole to fill, and it’s not clear if Reggie Cobb or Darrel Young are really up to the task.

#BOS

While John Hannah‘s return should help, losing Curtis Martin and Darrelle Revis for the rest of the season hurts. That said, sitting as the worst team in the league at 1-12, things cannot get much worse in Boston.

#CTO

The Makana had a shocking week: nobody came off the injured list (although Fran Tarkenton is due back next game) and nobody went onto it, meaning Cape Town had zero transactions.

#DUB

Of all of the injuries that hit Dublin this week (and there were 6 of them), perhaps the most impactful is losing Mason Crosby for the rest of the year, meaning Randy Bullock–who has been shaky to date–will carry the K duties for the rest of the season.

#LOM

Both Tom Fears and Mario Williams will be out for the rest of the year, allowing the Dzidudu to take a long look at Desmond Howard, both as a WR and KR. Williams’ absence will be harder to address, but the return of Marcell Dareus from injury will help.

#LON

The Fog welcome back a ton of talent this week, with, among others, Percy Harvin, Dat Nguyen, and Rayfield Wright all returning to action.

#NYG

Great news for the Royal Giants, as Odell Beckham, Jr. returns, something which should return Victor Cruz to his early season performance levels as teams have to account for both.

#RIO

Abner Haynes will be welcomed back with open arms, but now Dante Hall, Mike Garrett, and Jim Leonhard are all out and unlikely to be back no matter how deep of a postseason run the Carnival make. Cairo Santos is finally healthy, but Don Cockroft has been performing so well as a combination K/P, Rio moved Santos to the taxi squad.

#TOK

The Swallows just continue to get hammered with injuries, especially on the defensive side, where now both Karl Mecklenburg and Henry Ford join Von Miller in being out for the rest of the year. That means 4 of the top 7 LBs on the depth chart are out, and yet Tokyo is keeping pace with Rio, just behind Istanbul in the division.
