Year II 10 Week Review: Cape Town Makana

Cape Town Makana (2-8)

A perennial underperformer, it seems. The offense is anemic, the defense is alright. It may be that handing the keys to the offense to Fran Tarkenton is the turnaround point for the franchise: while his 6 starts have only produced 1 win, the team has looked better, and his performance has been solid enough.

Still, the Makana are 1 of 4 teams averaging under 400 yards of total offense, with the 2nd worst passing game in the league overall. The pass defense is quite good; the run defense less so, but the problems are clearly on the offensive side of the ball.

#Bottom Line

Draft Needs. TE, OL./T, LB.

Week Four Draftee Update: Joey Porter. Really yet to see the field, which needs to change.

#QB

Tarkenton has a QBR over 100, with 14 TDs and only 1 interception. He looks to be “the man” as the Makana move forward.

#RB

Adrian Peterson has been healthy, and producing, having rushed for just over 1000 yards in his 10 games. Nobody has been given much of a chance behind him, but nobody has stepped forward, either. Last year’s fill-in star, Andre Ellington has had all of 4 carries–for 0 yards total–and both Ben Tate and John David Crow (out for another 6 weeks) have been held to under 3 yards a rush.

#WR & TE

The wideouts are all solid, but a great performance from someone sure would help. Instead, there is Larry Fitzgerald with 43 catches, Randy Moss with over 500 yards and 6 TDs and Cris Carter and Greg Jennings being more than respectable as the #3 and #4 guys.

They essentially don’t have a TE: Kyle Rudolph (now injured) has 6 catches, Jim Dray has 1.

#OL

The G’s–Randall McDaniel and Steve Hutchinson–have been great, and John Sullivan at C and Grady Alderman at 1 T serviceable. But the final T spot has been a been question mark, as Jared Veldheer has looked overmatched and Brandon Albert behind him is largely untested.

#DL

Calais Campbell and Jared Allen are beasts, and Alan Page has been dependable. But nobody else has really stepped up and even Campbell and Allen have only 1 sack each (Campbell has 12 hurries and Allen 14 stuffs, each among the league leaders). Sharrif Floyd has struggled to the point where a 3-4 is being looked at more and more.

#LB

Karlos Dansby and E.J. Junior have been solid, but there is little else of note here, other than Chad Greenway and Dale Meinert‘s injuries. Alex Okafor and Porter need to both step up.

#DB

Patrick Peterson has been dependable in a secondary hit with injuries, with 50 tackles, 11 deflections, and 3 interceptions. Aeneas Williams has been strong, but Paul Krause has been limited to 2 games and Tyrann Mathieu is out for the rest of the year. Newcomer Rodney Harrison has impressed at S.

#P & K

Fuad Reveiz continues to be fine, converting 17 of 22 field goals and all but one of his XP attempts.

Chuck Latourette has been very good, both as a P and as a return man.

#Returns

Latourette has been excellent on kickoffs, averaging over 31 yards per, and will probably take over from Peterson on punt returns as well.
