02.08 – This Week In Whirled Football

Things are back to normal after the bye weeks, and we see our first major statistical milestone fall as Rio de Janeiro’s Jim Brown eclipses 1,000 yards rushing on the season.

#AAA

S Eric Weddle is likely to miss the rest of the regular season (and the playoffs are a distant hope for Emperors’ fans at this point). Tyvon Branch will step into the starting role, but look for Tommy James and George Wilson to both see time as well.

#AMS

Amsterdam sits in 4th place, but saw some big changes this week as Matthew Stafford took over from Cam Newton at QB and the Lions welcomed Calvin Johnson back after a prolonged injury absence.

#BER

Alshon Jeffery will miss over a month, and John Abraham is out for the rest of the season. The Bärin’s receiving corps was already pretty deep, but look for Santonio Holmes and Chris Williams to step in for Jeffery. Abraham is more of a challenge, but Jim Purnell and Joe Fortunato should each pick up some snaps.

#BOS

Things have not gone well for the Bulldogs this year, and it got worse this week as Don Maynard will likely miss the rest of the season. This should be interesting, as Irving Fryar owed much of his great year to Maynard constantly being double-teamed: we’ll see how Fryar handles being the #1 option from here on out.

#LOM

Lomé’s receiving corps takes a hit this week, as Torry Holt is out for at least a game and Elroy Hirsch for a couple months. Someone from the trio of Roscoe Parrish, Chris Givens, and Peerless Price will have to step up for the Dzidudu. Also look for Harry Hamilton to get some reps at S for the injured Charles Godfrey.

#NYG

You know you’re living right when you’re undefeated and get through 3 consecutive weeks without any injuries. It’s the Royal Giants’ world, we’re all only living in it.

#RIO

Lots of people insist it doesn’t matter who Rio’s QB is. We may find out, as Len Dawson is out for close to 2 months. Otto Graham, who was adequate but no more than that as a fill in in Year I will be called on again for the Carnival.

#SYD

The Great White lose 2 defensive starters, as both CB Troy Vincent and LB Mychal Kendricks go down with injuries. Vincent will be covered by Dee Milliner and Trumaine Johnson; look for Byron Evans and John Offerdahl to fill in for Kendricks.

#TOK

The Swallows still hope Lionel Taylor will be healthy in time for next week’s game, but they will be without Jason McCourty in their secondary. Champ Bailey is fantastic fill-in for McCourty, but behind him both Terry Schmidt and Carl Lee are WFL unknowns. Erron Kinney was moved to the practice squad in hopes of Taylor’s return, leaving them thin at TE for the game.
