Week Five saw the number of undefeated teams in the WFL dwindle to one: the New York Royal Giants.
#BEI
Both starting S for Beijing are out for a while, as Tyrann Mathieu joined Paul Krause on the DL. Joey Browner and Chris Clemons will move into the starting lineup for the Red Stars.
#BER
Dick Butkus will be out for about 3 months, quite a blow to the center of Berlin’s defense. Look for Chuck Drazenovich to gain some snaps in his absence.
#BOS
Mike Haynes had 2 interceptions in Boston’s close defeat to New York … and then got injured. He’ll miss about 4 weeks, with Ty Law and Kyle Wilson helping out in the secondary.
#IST
David Akers has run afoul of management in Istanbul: after missing 3 of 6 FGs, rumors are that Akers will be cut this week, despite having set a record for FGs in a game (5) just a few weeks prior. With Justin Tucker‘s return still a week or 2 away, whomever the Janissaries call in will likely have an even shorter tenure.
#LON
The Fog will miss starting OL Russell Okung for the rest of the season. Rayfield Wright has been a capable backup at T; he’ll move into the starting lineup.
#ROM
Rome–already struggling this year–will have to overhaul their linebacking corps as both Ray May and Shaun Phillips will be out for somewhere between 3 and 4 months.
#SFO
Just as the Sea Lions offense seemed to turn the corner … starting WR Anquan Boldin will miss about 10 weeks of action and Arnaz Battles, who was the most likely replacement, will be out for a few weeks as well. San Francisco added Jake Reed to the roster at WR.
#SYD
Chuck Bednarik is out for the rest of the season for the Great White, leaving a large hole at LB. Sydney will look for Cameron Wake to take up the slack in the middle.
