02.02 This Week In Whirled Football

Too much real time has lapsed, making it hard to pick back up on some narrative threads. So, a light TWIWFL this week.

#AAA

Emperors fans are not used to mediocrity, which is a generous summary of their passing game so far in year 2. Patience is recommended, but if Philip Rivers doesn’t start to perform better soon, there could be a clamor to replace him. Addis’ situation has not been helped by a rash of injuries, the latest of which hit Charles Woodson and Manti Te’o, each of which are likely to be out at least a month.

#LOM

Marshall Faulk has been spectacular, rushing for over 240 yards and catching 15 passes out of the backfield. The question is, what does Lomé do when Thurman Thomas returns after week 3?

#LON

London’s 2-0 start owes a lot to newfound chemistry between Russell Wilson (a 107ish passing rating) and Steve Largent (15 catches for 248 yards) as it does to the 5 sacks from Clif Avrill, who has turned Jacob Green‘s injury into an opportunity to become the early leader for defensive MVP of the league.

#NYG

Eli Manning is silencing the doubters, playing fantastically in 2 convincing wins for New York, but the story of the Royal Giants is really their defense, led by a healthy Prince Amukamara and Jason Pierre-Paul. New York has given up a league-low 17 points through 2 games.

#RIO

Jim Brown and Jamaal Charles have combined for 596 yards rushing. In. Two. Games. That’s allowed Len Dawson to continue to be fantastically efficient, throwing the ball fewer than 40 times, but racking up a 124ish passing rating in doing so. About the only thing to go wrong for the Carnival is a long-term injury to Cairo Santos, who will be replaced by Don Cockroft.

#ROM

Rome continues to hand the reins to Peyton Manning, who continues to fumble them away with a passing rating under 60 while filling in for Andrew Luck. It’s drastic, but there are calls for Earl Morrall to be given a chance: he couldn’t be much worse, right?
