Over 300 yards rushing, and over 600 of total offense: yeah, Rio de Janeiro stormed into Year II looking like they mean business. But Sydney has weapons of their own, as Prop Bowl rusher Wilbert Montgomery returns alongside the potentially brilliant, yet maddeningly inconsistent Dan Marino.
Jim Brown and Jamaal Charles are expected to be great, but a key wrinkle for the Carnival showed up on their 4th play from scrimmage: after 21 yards on 3 rushes, Len Dawson found Michael Crabtree for a 31 yard completion. Brown ran it in from 16 yards out, to give Rio both an early lead and the promise of at least a moderate pass attack to complement their pound and ground.
Sydney is supposed to offer a similar balance, but it didn’t happen in this game, as Marino missed on his first 2 throws and the Great White were forced to punt.
Rio’s 2nd possession was similar to the first: 28 yards rushing, then a 17 yard pass from Dawson to Paul Warfield, then more rushing. This time, the drive stalled and Cairo Santos connected from 28 yards for a 10-0 lead.
Sydney showed what can happen when Marino finds his rhythm, as 4 consecutive completions helped to setup a 4 yard TD run from Larry Csonka and then, after an incompletion from Dawson on 3rd down, Darren Sproles took a Chris Gardocki punt back 71 yards. Suddenly, Sydney was on top, 13-10 (Cody Parkey missed the XPA) as the 1st quarter wound down. However, Montgomery was out for the game injured, taking away a major weapon.
The 2nd quarter was uneventful until the end, when a jarring hit from Rich Miano forced a fumble on a punt return by Dante Hall. Csonka took it in from 12 yards out for his 2nd TD of the day (and Parkey added his 2nd missed XP as well) to extend the lead to 19-10.
Rio responded with their version of a hurry up offense: 19 yards from Brown, then 11 more, then Dawson to Jordan Cameron for 25 yards, and Brown for an 11 yard TD. It was Cairo’s turn to miss the XPA, but the score was now 19-16, Sydney.
Rio would get the ball back, and Dawson seemed to be leading them to another score, going 4-5 on the drive, when he was intercepted by Eric Allen. That took us to halftime, with the Great White maintaining their 3 point lead.
Rio consumed half the 3rd quarter on a single drive, going 86 yards in 13 plays. Brown capped it with back to back 9 yard runs from the Sydney 18 yard line, pushing Rio back into the lead, 23-19.
Marino struggled mightily in the 2nd half, and when Rio got the ball back, they responded quickly, first surprising the Sydney defense with a 41 yard pass to Tony Gonzalez, and then with another TD from Brown, this one from 2 yards out.
That score occurred on the 1st play of the 4th quarter, and extended the lead to 30-19 in Rio’s favor. Sydney’s following drive showed a lot of their day: Marino was sacked once and completed 6 of 10 passes, but it was enough, as Harold Carmichael completed a key 3rd down and then hauled in a 7 yard TD, making it a 5 point game, 30-25.
But Rio is hard to catch in the 4th quarter: they patiently took 5 minutes off the clock behind Charles and Doc Elliott (Brown was sidelined with an injury), and Elliot scored from 17 yards out to make it a 2 score game, 37-25.
Facing a 4th and 20 at their own 17, Sydney was forced to punt, and they never saw the ball again, as Charles added 44 more yards running, and Dawson took a knee at the Sydney 2 yard game to run out the clock.
Brown rushed 26 times for 193 yards and 4 TDs and Charles added 126 yards on 19 attempts. With Brown out next week, it should be noted that Elliott picked up 24 yards on 3 carries, and looks to get more time as Charles’ partner. Dawson did well enough, completing 13 of 23 passes for 265 yards. Gonzalez caught 5 passes for 108 yards, and Josh Gordon and Crabtree provided a solid deep threat, combining for 95 yards on 4 catches.
For Sydney, the loss of Montgomery was significant, but they were forced to pass more than perhaps they wanted, rushing only 12 times for 62 yards on the day. Marino struggled, completing 19 of 43 passes for 213 yards. Dwight Clark and Jeremy Maclin led the way with 4 catches it for a combined 102 yards. Sproles was excellent in the return game, averaging around 25 yards on both kickoffs and punts.
Defensively, Rio’s constant running game helped the tackling stats of Sydney’s LBs, with Zach Thomas and Mychal Kendricks registering 12 and 11 respectively. Thomas added 2 deflections and 2 stuffs, but that was really about it on that side of the ball: improvement is needed.
For Rio, the surprising Buster Skrine led the way with 6 tackles and 1 of the Carnival’s 12 deflections (Eric Berry and Dontari Poe had 3 each). Tamba Hali had the only sack of the game.
Brown’s injury looks minor, which is probably as important for Rio as the win itself. Sydney continues to be a team that will only go as far as Marino manages them, something that is only more true if Montgomery is out for any significant length of time.
