01.18 This Week in Whirled Football

Two games left! All teams got an extra week of rest in preparation for the final push–that has led to some interesting roster churn as we moved towards the postseason.

Riley Reiff is back from injury, but he’s lost his starting job to Jimbo Covert and Lomas Brown.

#BOS

All of a sudden, the Bulldogs backfield is largely healthy: Chris Johnson will come back as #3 on the depth chart, instead of the starter. Still, he joins Curtis Martin and the impressive fill-in Bruce Harper to create a very deep set of running backs. That’s important as the WR corps continues to be decimated, with six WR/TEs on IR right now. Both Ben Watson and Julian Edelman have been called up for the final games of the year.

#DUB

While Damhas fans are thrilled to see RB Jim Taylor return, DE Lavvie Dilweg–so impressive in place of the injured J.J. Watt–will miss the rest of the regular season. Taylor’s return, combined with the success of James Starks and Alfred Blue, have forced Donny Anderson–who has had a decent year–to the taxi squad. Similarly, Brandon Harris, who has been valuable in nickle and dime sets, moves to the taxi squad with the return of Darren Sharper.

The Dzidudu have a conundrum on their hands. They have an outside shot at the playoffs, and Jim Kelly is healthy. The issue is that Austin Davis has been fantastic all season, throwing for over 3,000 yards and putting up a QB rating of 100.0 in that time. They are likely to stick with Davis for the time being.

While Sam Mills‘ injury (likely to keep him out throughout the postseason) will hurt, the Sea Lions are looking good as they roll into the end of the season. Vernon Davis and Frank Gore are back, and both Leo Nomellini and Bryant Young should return by the time the playoffs begin.

#SYD

The Great White’s playoff chances took a hit when Zach Thomas was lost for the rest of the year. Sydney will be looking to Koa Misi and Jeremiah Trotter to step up in his place. LeSean McCoy is back, having been injured in the very first game of the year, but there’s no way he unseats Wilbert Montgomery from the starting RB slot. Seldom used Steve Van Buren moves to the taxi squad with McCoy’s return.
