01.01 This Week in Whirled Football

Welcome to our weekly review of major injuries, roster moves, and other miscellany related to the WFL, organized by team for your viewing pleasure.

#AMS

A rough week of practice for the lions saw Joique Bell, Gary Danielson, and Wesley Walls all go down with injuries likely to keep them each out 3-4 months. Bill Munson was signed a 3rd string QB, with Rodney Peete and Wes Horton joining the practice squad. Walls will be missed the most, with Brandon Pettigrew likely to pick up his snaps.

#BEI

With Dave Butz out for up to 4 months, look for Gerald McCoy to step in. Beijing may be the only team in the league that could lose a player of Butz’s quality on the line and not miss a beat.

#BER

Look for Joe Hawley to start for one week in place of the injured Justin Blalock at G, Berlin added Keshon Johnson and Harvey Dahl to their practice squad.

#DUB

A difficult start to the season got worse: Dublin knew that Don Hutson and Mike Michalske would miss a few weeks each after their opening game, but Clay Matthews, Jr. is now out for an extended period of time, with dome saying he’s done for the year. The Damha will be looking for A.J. Hawk and Jadaveon Clowney to pick up the slack, but neither of them are the force at LB that Matthews is. Brandon Brooks will step in for Michalske, while Jordy Nelson and Sterling Sharpe should help make up for Hutson’s absence.

#NYG

With five players on IR, the Royal Giants have had to do some roster shuffling. While only Rashad Jennings and Brad Van Pelt are likely to miss significant time, losing Denard Robinson, Aaron Thomas and Clay Harbor along with Jennings greatly thinned New York’s options at blocking back and tight end, allowing pickups Will Ta’ufo’ou and Marcel Jensen to step right into the active roster. Fred Taylor, signed to the practice squad, is already turning heads if the spate of backfield injuries continues. Van Pelt is a big miss, and it will be challenging to make up for his production with either Geno Hayes or Telvin Smith.

#SYD

LeSean McCoy‘s serious injury may open the door for Steve Van Buren, who has been turning heads in practice.
