Two very distinct games in one: there were 51 points scored in the first quarter, then only 34 the rest of the game, including overtime. Yep, overtime.
But let’s start with the dizzying, head-spinning first quarter first.
It started innocently enough: a good kickoff return by Napoleon Kaufman, a completion from Philip Rivers to Lance Alworth, and then a good showing by the Istanbul defense resulted in a 48 yard FG attempt from Sebastian Janikowski, which was good. Johnny Unitas‘ first pass was picked off by Carlos Rogers, who took it back 42 yards for the pick-6, and it was 10-0 Addis Ababa, and a rout seemed possible.
But Gary Ballman–one of the stars on the day for Istanbul–provided a 56 yard return on the kickoff, and Unitas found Antonio Brown for 25 yards and then (after a couple missed throws) John Stallworth for the 10 yard TD to make it 10-7.
It took 3 plays for the Emperors to answer, with LaDainian Tomlinson scampering up the middle for a 36 yard TD. At this point, 4 minutes had been played, and it was 17-7 in favor of the home team.Within the next 4 minutes, Istanbul would add a 41 yard FG from Justin Tucker and a 63 yard punt return from Antwaan Randle El to tie the game at 17.
Istanbul launched what passed for a long drive at that point, taking all of 3 minutes to go 34 yards before Tucker hit a chip shot from 26 yards out to give the Janissaries their first lead, 20-17.
Despite continued success running the ball through Tomlinson, Rivers was struggling to find his form, and early injuries to both John Jefferson and Alworth certainly did not help. Still, fill-in receiver Vincent Jackson added a 50 yard TD with just over 2 minutes left in the quarter to make it 24-20. Istanbul was not done, however, and Louis Lipps caught a 21 yard TD to cap the scoring on an incredible 15 minutes of football that saw Istanbul up 27-24.
And as the teams changed sides, the game shifted dramatically. What looked like an easy 100+ point game suddenly stalled. Addis put together a 6 minute drive that saw Tomlinson dive in from the 1 yard line, but when Ballman fumbled the kickoff, the Emperors were unable to take advantage as Rod Woodson intercepted Rivers. The teams traded punts until halftime and then, early in the 3rd quarter, another interception–this one by Dick Harris off Unitas–setup a 32 yard FG from Janikowski and Addis extended their lead to 34-27.
Again, though, Istanbul had an answer with a dirve that ended with an 11 yard rumble from Jerome Bettis, a 12 yard completion to Stallworth, a 9 yard toss to Bettis, and a 20 yard TD to Lipps. With 6 minutes left in the 3rd, we were tied at 34. Another Rivers interception–this one by Darrin Walls–was the only play of note as the teams traded punts until Charlie Joiner pulled in a short pass and took it 40 yards for the TD midway through the 4th. But a familiar pattern ensued: Unitas was 4 for 4 on the ensuing drive, finding Stallworth for an 18 yard TD to tie the game again at 41.
The Janissaries engineered a solid drive with 2 minutes to play, setting up Tucker for a 45 yard FG to win the game, but a bad snap ruined it, and we were headed to overtime.
Unitas was only 3-7 on the drive, but a 21 yard scramble early was vital, and a 2 key 3rd down plays (12 yard to Hines Ward on a 3rd and 10 and 15 to Brown on a 3rd and 20) setup Tucker once more. He was good from 30 yards out. The stage seemed set for league MVP Rivers to take over, but it was not to be: Tomlinson lost yards on a screen, Ron Mix was called for holding, and Rivers scramble on 4th and 9 only managed to pick up 6 yards, and Istanbul was victorious!
Unitas was OK, completing 25 of 49 attempts for 374 yards and 4 TDs. Brown caught 8 balls for 126 yards and Ward and Stallworth combined for 11 catches for 159 yards. But the story of the Istanbul offense was the misery of their running game and the spectacular performances they got from their return men. Bettis rushed 12 times for 37 yards filling in for an injured Franco Harris, and they clearly need more from their running game to succeed long term. But when you get great field position from Ballman averaging 44 yards a return, and when Randle El adds a TD on a punt return, it can mask a lot of other offensive issues.
For Addis Ababa, Rivers put in a decidedly subpar performance, completing only half his passes (22 of 44) for 261 yards. Tomlinson was fantastic, gaining 184 yards on 26 carries, and leading the team with 8 catches for another 36 yards. Wes Chandler, Tim Brown, and Joiner combined for 10 catches and 147 yards, but the lack of a consistent deep threat was an issue, as Chandler was constantly double-teamed in the absence of Jefferson and Alworth.
Ray Lewis led the Janissaries’ defense with 12 tackles and Mean Joe Greene had a great day up front with 6 tackles, a sack, and 4 stuffs. Greg Lloyd added their other sack.
Rogers had 12 tackles, 2 deflections, and a forced fumble to go along with the pick-6 and Leslie O’Neal had Addis Ababa’s only sack of the day. Addis certainly needs more from their defense to repeat their performance from last season.
The Janissaries’ coach was less than thrilled after the game:
“Look, Addis Ababa is one of the best teams in the league. So we have to be happy to beat them and in the Yedek … Yedenew … their home stadium no less. But we didn’t play good football. We gave up almost 200 yards to LDT while our running game was a mess. Our passing game put up yardage but was inefficient and bogged down in the red zone. I can’t complain about Gary Ballman, but even that crazy genius fumbled it away once. The bottom line is we need to celebrate beating a top team in their house, but we have a lot, a lot of stuff to work on.”
